PHOENIX – Two people were killed in a wrong-way crash that shut down an East Valley freeway on Monday evening, authorities said.
Three vehicles were involved in the 6 p.m. wreck on westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway near Alma School Road in Chandler, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said Tuesday.
A white Yukon driven by Sarah Walterscheid got on the freeway heading in the wrong direction. Authorities said the truck sped up the off-ramp into oncoming traffic, slamming head-on into Jackie Keeper’s black Kia.
Keeper, 44, and Walterscheid, 30, both of Chandler, were pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital.
DPS originally identified the driver of the Yukon as Peter Walterscheid, but later retracted the information and said he was the vehicle’s registered owner but was not driving.
The driver of the Honda, whose name was not released, suffered minor injuries.
The investigation remains active, DPS said.
The freeway was closed until around 10 p.m.
