Glendale breaks ground on fishing lake at Heroes Regional Park

PHOENIX – Officials held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday at a 4-acre plot of Glendale Heroes Regional Park that will be transformed into a fishing lake over the coming months.

“This has been 22 years in the making,” Councilmember Joyce Clark said. “I am so excited because this lake is not only a great amenity for the residents, but, think about it, it will establish a signature look for this park.”

Heroes Regional Park Lake is scheduled to be completed later this year near 83rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

It will feature a fountain lit with color-changing lights and be surrounded by a walking trail, ramadas and fishing piers.

As Glendale’s second urban fishing lake, it will be stocked with rainbow trout in the winter and bluegill, sunfish and catfish when it’s warmer as part of the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s community fishing program.

“As an avid sportsman and a firm believer in people enjoying the outdoors, I’m so very excited that we’re taking one more step towards this 88-acre park being fully completed,” Mayor Jerry Weiers said.

Heroes Regional Park already offers a wide variety of recreational activities, including a skate park, archery range and basketball courts.
