PHOENIX — The parents of three children from Tucson were arrested on Sunday after thousands of fentanyl pills were discovered in a hidden compartment of a child’s car seat, authorities said.
The discovery was made along Interstate 17 near Cordes Lakes after the parents were pulled over by a Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputy for making an unsafe lane change. The three children – all under the age of six – were in the car with the parents at the time of the traffic stop.
The deputy noticed inconsistencies during the traffic stop and decided to run his K9 around the vehicle, with the dog alerting the presence of drugs inside the car, according to a press release.
More than 52,000 fentanyl pills were found inside the car seat, leading to the arrest of 27-year-old Roberto Guerrero and 24-year-old Ana Razo-Villela.
The parents are charged with transportation of dangerous drugs and child endangerment, according to the release, while the children are now under the care of the Department of Child Safety.
“I wish I could say I was shocked that parents of three young and innocent children would use a car seat to conceal such dangerous drugs,” Yavapai County Sheriff David Rhodes said in the release. “But this is the sad reality of our world today. People try to get creative when hiding their criminal activity, but they need to know that they can’t hide anything from us.
“I’m grateful for the work our K9 deputy did on this stop. His thoroughness not only saved the lives of those who suffer from drug addiction, but his actions helped rescue three very young children from this dangerous environment.”
The fentanyl pills had a value of approximately $1 million, according to the release.
