PHOENIX — Meghan McCain delivered a strong message Thursday against President Donald Trump and rioters who took over the U.S. Capitol a day earlier.
The daughter of longtime Republican U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona called on the 25th Amendment to be invoked to remove Trump from office in light of the riots that occurred Wednesday in Washington, D.C., as the Senate and House worked to confirm Joe Biden’s victory.
She said those who incited violence as a result of the election were “the scum of the Earth.”
“Our country cannot go on like this and we cannot possibly risk the idea that we could have more violence between now and President Biden getting elected and inaugurated,” McCain said Thursday on The View.
McCain and her mother, Cindy, have publicly shared their disdain for the Republican president in the months leading up to and following the election.
Most of that is due to Trump’s feud with the late senator, who died in August 2018, and their ideological differences regarding the Republican Party.
The newest rebuttal toward Trump is based on the president’s refusal to accept the result of the election and the consequences seen Wednesday.
Four people died during Wednesday’s riots and dozens were arrested.
“The bedrock of our democracy and the bedrock of who we are as Americans is the peaceful transition of power and he is clearly a president who has turned into a mad king,” McCain said.
