PHOENIX – Police in a suburb west of Phoenix shot a man they said tried to run over officers during a traffic stop of another vehicle.
El Mirage police said Theron William Rood was struck by bullets in his right arm and left leg and was taken to a hospital late Saturday.
He faces charges that include attempted homicide, aggravated assault and endangerment. He was booked into Maricopa County Jail.
Police said in a statement they had pulled over a vehicle near Dysart and Cactus roads around 11:30 p.m. when a second car arrived from the other direction.
An officer made contact with Rood, but shortly after exchanging words, authorities said he drove the car in their direction. He hit the police unit and the other driver’s car, they said.
Two officers pulled out their weapons and fired.
Police said Rood then got out of his car and ran away, but he was arrested a short distance from the scene.
It was the second El Mirage officer-involved shooting of the year, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM statistics.
