PHOENIX – A suspect was in serious condition Friday after being shot by two Phoenix police officers, authorities said.

The officers were patrolling together near 19th Avenue and Indian School Road at around 5:45 a.m. when they observed the 35-year-old male suspect assaulting a female near a sidewalk, according to police.

The officers approached the two subjects by foot and the suspect began to walk away and ignored commands to stop, police said.

The suspect removed a handgun from his waistband while fleeing and pointed it at himself, police said.

Further attempts to get the suspect to stop and drop his weapon were ignored, according to police.

The two officers then shot and wounded the suspect when he attempted to walk back to where they had left the female, police said.

The suspect, whose identity hasn’t been released, was transported to a local hospital where he is still being treated.

No officers were hurt during the incident and an investigation is ongoing.

It was the department’s 21st officer-involved shooting of the year, based on KTAR News research.
