PHOENIX — Christmas tree permits for the Tonto National Forest will be available for purchase beginning Nov. 16.

“Many families find a Christmas tree from their National Forest a unique treasure and have continued the tradition over the years,” acting forest supervisor Tom Torres said in a press release.

Permits can be purchased online, by phone or by mail through the following district ranger stations: Cave Creek Ranger District, Mesa Ranger District and Payson Ranger District.

Families can get a free permit if they have an Every Kid in the Park pass, although a transaction fee will be charged online.

Online permits are valid through Dec. 30, while permits acquired by phone or mail are valid through Dec. 24.

“For families creating new traditions or continuing this time-honored tradition, a trip to their local forest to cut their own Christmas tree is an exciting experience as they search for the perfect holiday centerpiece,” Torres said.

The designated area and additional cutting instructions will be posted to the Tonto Forest’s website in November, according to the release.

Forest authorities say tree cutting helps improve forest health. By thinning densely populated areas, remaining trees will grow larger and provide more space for wildlife.
