Phoenix police officer accused of threatening Mayor Kate Gallego

PHOENIX – A Phoenix police officer allegedly made a “credible threat” against Mayor Kate Gallego, authorities said Tuesday.
No details about the nature of the threat were made public by either the mayor’s office or the Phoenix Police Department.
A police department statement said the accused officer has been assigned to home.
The Tempe Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation, and Phoenix’s Professional Standards Bureau is conducting an internal probe.
A statement from Gallego’s office said the mayor is receiving additional police protection.
The mayor’s office issued the following statement:
The Mayor’s office is aware of a credible threat made by a member of the Phoenix Police Department to harm the Mayor. We are also aware an investigation is underway. Additional police protection has been provided to the Mayor.
We have no further comment at this time.

The Phoenix Police Department takes seriously claims of misconduct by its officers. A criminal investigation is being conducted by the Tempe Police Department while the Phoenix Police Department’s Professional Standards Bureau conducts the internal investigation. There are no additional details available at this time. The Mayor’s office is aware of the investigation and steps have been taken to ensure Mayor Gallego’s safety. While the investigation is ongoing the involved Officer has been assigned to home.
