PHOENIX — Tucson-area health officials are recommending residents skip most traditional Halloween activities this year to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Officials are asking everyone to avoid activities that would result in close contact with people who aren’t in their close social circle.

That includes parties, haunted house attractions and door-to-door trick-or-treating.

“The entire 2020 holiday season will look different this year,” Dr. Theresa Cullen, Pima County health director, said in a press release. “I encourage everyone to have fun, but do so safely.”

Health officials instead are recommending residents engage in virtual events to celebrate the holiday.

Online parties and drive-through events were among the activities recommended in lieu of normal in-person gatherings.

Gatherings of 50 people or more are still banned in the state under a previous executive order from Gov. Doug Ducey.

“Regardless of how you choose to celebrate Halloween, it is important to continue to wear face masks, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer and follow physical distancing,” Cullen said.
