PHOENIX — A Maricopa High School student has tested positive for coronavirus, district officials said in a letter to families on Monday.
Maricopa Unified School District was alerted of the positive test Monday and subsequently shut down all areas of the high school where the student was present.
The district, which is located about 30 miles south of downtown Phoenix, planned to clean and disinfect all affected areas.
Members and staff of the football and wrestling teams were also asked to quarantine as a result of the positive test.
District officials added that anyone who was possibly exposed to the student had been contacted.
Maricopa began offering some in-person learning options Aug. 17, the first day schools were allowed to do so under an order from Gov. Doug Ducey.
Most Arizona schools have been operating with virtual-only learning to start the academic year.
Some districts, notably Queen Creek and J.O. Combs Unified in the southeast Valley, resumed in-person learning options last week.
Combs reverted back to virtual-only learning last Thursday after dozens of teachers and staff called out because of health concerns related to in-person learning.
