PHOENIX – U.S. Sens. Kyrsten Sinema and Martha McSally introduced a bipartisan resolution Monday to designate July 22 as Glioblastoma Awareness Day and honor the legacy of Arizona political icon John McCain.

The Arizona senators’ resolution calls for increased efforts to improve treatment options and care for patients with brain cancers.

“John McCain is my hero and his leadership is a constant inspiration to all Arizonans. Our resolution honors him and all Americans battling this disease, and urges the nation to advance new treatments for glioblastoma and all brain cancers,” Sinema, a Democrat said in a press release.

“More than 700,000 patients in the United States are living with the tragic diagnosis of some kind of brain tumor,” McSally said in a press release. “The deadliest of these tumors, glioblastoma, has taken the life of far too many, including Arizona’s own Senator John McCain.

“I am committed to delivering hope to these patients as they courageously battle this disease and raising awareness, starting with recognizing July 22, 2020 as Glioblastoma Awareness Day.”

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a longtime friend of McCain, and Massachusetts’ two Democratic senators, Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, joined the Arizonans in introducing the resolution.

McCain died Aug. 25, 2018, at age 81, 13 months after being diagnosed with glioblastoma.

He served as a Republican U.S. Senator from Arizona for more than 30 years and was in his sixth term at the time of his death.
