PHOENIX – A suspect allegedly fatally shot a woman and barricaded himself inside a Phoenix apartment before taking his own life, authorities said Wednesday.
Phoenix police responded to the residence near 19th and Glendale avenues for a welfare check just after 10 p.m. Tuesday, Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said in an email.
Officers heard a weapon fire and saw 36-year-old Janine Lily exit the apartment with a gunshot wound. They found out that the suspect, 39-year-old Johnny Watson, was armed inside with two children, Fortune said.
The children were rescued, Fortune said, and then Watson barricaded himself in the apartment.
Several hours later, police found Watson dead inside of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot, Fortune said.
Lily died after being taken to a hospital.
No other details were immediately available.
The investigation was ongoing Wednesday morning.
