Mesa family sues ex-coach, school district in underage sex case

PHOENIX – The family of a teenage girl in Mesa has filed a lawsuit in federal court against a former coach accused of sexual conduct, an assistant coach and the school district.

Court documents showed the civil suit was filed Dec. 23 in the U.S. District Court of Arizona.

Kyler Ashley, 24, coached junior varsity girls basketball at Dobson High and was charged in May with multiple counts of sexual conduct with a minor and sexual abuse for alleged interactions with two 17-year-old girls, including intercourse with one.

Assistant coach Joshua Bribiescas was also named in the suit.

The East Valley Tribune reported the court filing accused the assistant of knowing of the allegations and failing to report them.

A December plea agreement reduced Ashley’s charges to three counts of attempted sexual conduct and one count of luring a minor for sexual exploitation.

He could face up to 10 years in prison.

Ashley was arrested while attempting to meet up for a sexual encounter with a 16-year-old female player he’d been communicating with on social media since September 2018.

Mesa Public Schools said in a statement at the time of his arrest that Ashley was a seasonal basketball coach and did not teach or work in any other capacity for the district.
