PHOENIX — It’s the time of year where food temptations are real and keeping your waistline intact becomes real hard.

A Valley dietitian believes there’s a clear path to not gaining weight during the holiday season, especially with buffets a popular option for families getting together.

“Take a minute and look at every single option so you know what’s going to end up on your plate,” registered dietitian Emily Orvos told KTAR News 92.3 FM. “If there are a million things you want to try, grab a couple bites of a lot of different things.”

Orvos said using discretion and moderation is important, but that it’s also important to not be too restrictive.

Placing too many restrictions on a holiday diet can backfire.

Restrictions can lead to binging food, which could lead to the opposite effect of what is intended, according to Orvos.

“Don’t overthink it,” Orvos said. “Just make sure you have carbs, vegetables and proteins on your plate.”

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Debra Dale contributed to this report.
