Power AZ program offering bill assistance for middle-income APS, SRP customers

Arizonans in need of help with their utility bills may be in luck, as the state-sanctioned Power AZ program is offering up to $640 per year for middle-income customers of Arizona Public Service (APS) or Salt River Project (SRP).

Customers who make up to the state median income — roughly $4,890 per month for single households or $9,400 for families of four — may be qualified.

People in financial crisis may also qualify for an additional one-time helping of $500, according to APS.

“Power AZ is designed for people who historically have not been able to take advantage of such programs and can help those who are experiencing new, unexpected hardships,” APS Chief Customer Officer Danielle Evans said in a release. “Many people may not realize they meet the eligibility requirements because they think they earn too much for bill assistance, but those are precisely the customers this program was created for.”

The program was first launched by Gov. Katie Hobbs in March in conjunction with the Department of Economic Security. Officials estimated it could help 30,000 households that don’t qualify for federal assistance.

Customers interested in the funds can apply online. Officials said funding may expire in September.

Applications will automatically also be checked for eligibility in the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program that is reserved for households at or below 60% of the state median income or 50% over the federal poverty line.

Other ways APS customers can save

People experiencing unforeseen financial troubles, such as a lowered income, could have access to $1,000 per year.

Those who can provide evidence of an unexpected income decrease or rising bills can qualify for up to $500 over a year through a partnership with The Salvation Army.

What about SRP customers?

The provider has a $5 million pool to be distributed to its customers in partnership with nonprofit Wildfire, as people experiencing hardships can access up to $800 in bill assistance.

Hardships that could lead to eligibility include job loss, medical emergencies or unexpected expenses. Applicants will have to show their SRP bill, proof of identification and documentation verifying the hardships.

“No Arizonan should have to choose between cooling their home and paying for food, rent or other basic needs,” Wildfire executive director Kelly McGowan said in a release. “Through this partnership with SRP, households facing an unexpected financial setback can receive meaningful relief when they need it most.

“By working with trusted community agencies, we can ensure these resources reach families across the Valley and help them stay safe and cool this summer.”
