PHOENIX – An iconic New Mexico-style Phoenix restaurant and its customers are mourning the loss of its matriarch.
Los Dos Molinos on Sunday announced the death of founder and chef Victoria Chavez.
Chavez and her husband, Eddie, opened their first restaurant in Springerville, near the New Mexico border, more than 30 years ago, according to the Los Dos Molinos website.
The restaurant name is Spanish for “The Two Grinders” and was inspired by the chili pepper grinders used by the founders’ families.
“It’s with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Chef Victoria, Matriarch and founder of Los Dos Molinos. She was so many things to so many people. We will miss her very much. She is gone, but her legacy will live on forever,” said a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page.
The restaurant’s fans flooded the comments with condolences and fond memories.
“What a legacy she left. I‘m sure, she is looking down with a big smile on her face,” wrote Yvonne N. Pinckard.
“She was a beautiful and kind lady and I will never forget her giving me a bag of green chilies and telling me how to roast them. Every time I roast green chilies I think of Victoria’s instructions. And that was 25 years ago,” wrote Bobbi Beez Wells.
“So sad to hear, such a wonderful person and great personality. She’ll be Spicing up Heaven for sure,” wrote Don Stahlman.
“I remember eating in the Springerville restaurant as a little girl, and was so excited to see the central location when I moved to Phoenix! Sending lots of love and condolences,” wrote Kendra Anaya.
Los Dos Molinos has two locations, in Uptown on Camelback Road near 12th Street and in south Phoenix on Central Avenue near Dobbins Road.
The restaurants will be closed until Friday following Chavez’s death.
