PHOENIX – The Phoenix Police Department on Tuesday released tense body camera footage of officers fatally shooting an armed and apparently suicidal suspect this summer.
The footage from cameras worn by two officers who fired their weapons is part of a 15-minute “critical incident briefing” video covering a Sept. 9 shooting near Thunderbird Road and 43rd Avenue.
The information in the video — including 911 audio, photos, the body cam footage and narration – is consistent with the information distributed by police at the time of the shooting.
Hector Miranda Jr., 47, was carrying a knife and handgun, which turned out to be a replica, after police responded to reports that he’d stabbed his mother in the head.
“He’s saying he wants to commit suicide and he’s walking toward me,” one of the officers can be heard saying in the video.
The officer yelled at Miranda to stop walking and drop the weapon. When Miranda didn’t comply, two officers fired multiple times.
Police eventually apprehended Miranda, who died after being taken to a hospital.
No officers were injured during the incident.
After the shooting occurred, the officers who fired their weapons were identified as 22-year-old Ridel Daudinot, who has been on the force for one year, and 22-year-old Joshua Freer, who has been on the force for 1½ years.
Tuesday’s video was the third critical incident briefing released as part of the department’s pledge to increase transparency and accountability. The first was released Oct. 30 and covered an Aug. 27 police shooting.
The department has said it plans to create briefing videos on all critical incidents that have occurred since the Aug. 27 shooting, and all future incidents, and post them on social media and the city’s officer-involved shooting web page.
Phoenix police officers have been involved in two shootings since the incident covered in Tuesday’s video.
There have been 34 shootings involving law enforcement in the Phoenix area in 2019 as of Tuesday, 14 involving the Phoenix Police Department, according to statistics compiled by KTAR News 92.3 FM.
In 2018, Phoenix officers were involved in a department-record 44 shootings.
