Airbnb chooses Phoenix woman to go to Antarctica for research project

PHOENIX — A Phoenix woman was one of five people chosen to participate in a research project in Antarctica this winter.

Airbnb, the sponsor of the project, announced Wednesday that 35-year-old Tynthia was selected from more than 140,000 applicants. Her last name was not included in the press release.

The group will travel to the remote continent in December to help the Ocean Conservancy collect snow samples and study the effects of microplastics, according to the release.

They will also spend time in Chile studying their findings and training to become advocates for ocean preservation.

“By understanding the impact of plastic pollution in such a remote location, it is hoped that the five volunteers will deliver insights on how we can help protect the Antarctic and the wider world,” Airbnb stated in the release.

Tynthia, who experienced homelessness as a child, has worked for the Red Cross and a Ghanaian orphanage in West Africa.

“It’s 2019—I feel like we all have a voice and the tools to make ourselves heard around the world,” she said in a tweet.

“Why not say something that helps others help themselves and the world we live in for generations to come?”

The other four participants are from Hawaii, Norway, India and the United Arab Emirates.
