Southbound Interstate 17 in Phoenix closed after dump truck wreck

PHOENIX – Southbound Interstate 17 in Phoenix was shut down for several hours on Friday afternoon because of a wreck, authorities said.

All traffic was being forced to exit at Northern Avenue and could then re-enter the freeway a mile later at Glendale Avenue, according to the Arizona Department of transportation.

The accident, which occurred just after 3 p.m., involved a dump truck hauling a trailer with equipment rolled over and sprawled across all four lanes just beyond the Glendale exit, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Nobody was injured but there was a fuel spill, DPS said.

The initial closure was at the Glendale exit, but it was extended a mile about an hour after the wreck. Southbound I-17 traffic was backed up beyond Cactus Road by 4 p.m.

The freeway was reopened shortly after 6 p.m.

Northbound traffic was not affected.
