PHOENIX – Former Arizona Secretary of State Michele Reagan has found a new calling – justice of the peace.
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors announced last week it had appointed Reagan to replace her father, Justice Michael Reagan, who had presided over the McDowell Mountain Precinct since 2004.
He retired in late July.
A justice of peace’s duties include officiating civil lawsuits of $10,000 or less; tenant and landlord disputes; civil and criminal traffic offenses, such as DUIs; and violation of restraining orders.
The precinct stretches east to west from Tatum Boulevard to McDowell Road and north to south from Stagecoach Pass to Thomas Road.
Michele Reagan oversaw a bigger area than that in her one term as the state’s chief elections official from 2015 to 2019.
Previously, she’d been a state legislator.
The Republican lost in the 2018 primary to first-time office seeker Steve Gaynor.
She will have to run for the office in the 2020 primary and general elections to complete the term, which lasts through 2022.
Justices of the peace aren’t required to be lawyers but they must be registered Arizona voters, live in the precinct where they will work and be able to read and write in English.
Reagan recently served as Justice of the Peace Pro Tempore in Pinal County.
She was selected over Sherwood Johnston III, Lorie B. Patrick, Christopher T. Hoynicki, Biju Panicker and A. Douglas LaSota.
