PHOENIX — The suspect of the Arizona Department of Public Safety shooting has been charged with first-degree murder as well as other charges, DPS announced Sunday.
Isaac King was also charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, multiple counts of aggravated assault, three counts of endangerment and resisting arrest.
He made a remote appearance before a judge from his hospital room, authorities said.
King, 20, was accused of getting an officer’s gun and killing Trooper Tyler Edenhofer, 24. King also is believed to have shot also trooper Dalin Dorris in the shoulder and injured him during the eight-minute fight along the Interstate 10 late Wednesday night.
It was unclear how King got the gun.
The suspect was alert after being medically induced into a coma, DPS trooper Kameron Lee said Friday.
He was taken into custody and transported to the hospital. After being put into a coma, King was taken out and became alert, Lee said.
Col. Frank Milstead, the head of DPS, said during a press conference on Thursday that King had a history of mental health issues and had been taking medication for anxiety and depression. He did not have a criminal history.
An investigation is ongoing, Milstead said.
