Arizona law enforcement reaches out to DPS after trooper killed on duty

PHOENIX — Police departments and others in metro Phoenix and state law enforcement used social media to share an outpouring of condolences after hearing of the line-of-duty death of a highway trooper.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officer Tyler Edenhofer was shot and killed Wednesday night in a struggle with a suspect who had been throwing things onto eastbound Interstate 10 in Avondale.

Another trooper, Dalin Dorris, was also shot, but he will recover, DPS Director Col. Frank Milstead said. A third trooper suffered minor injuries in the altercation with the suspect, who had not been publicly identified.

Edenhofer graduated from the highway patrol academy in May and was training in the field when he and the others responded to calls about the suspect near Avondale Boulevard.

After officers reached the scene, the suspect struggled with them. Eventually he grabbed a service weapon and fired two shots. The injured were taken to Abrazo West Campus in Goodyear, where Edenhofer was pronounced dead.
