Phoenix expected to continue its tradition of festive Thanksgiving weather

PHOENIX – If there’s one thing Phoenix residents and visitors can usually be thankful for, it’s festive Thanksgiving weather.

And forecasters are saying this holiday weekend won’t break the Valley tradition.

“The next couple days, we’re looking really nice,” Chris Kuhlman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Wednesday morning. “Sunny skies today, temperatures above normal, with highs mid-70s. And we’ll see the mid-70s last through at least probably Friday. A little bit of clouds on Thanksgiving, but we’re going to stay dry.”

What is normal Thanksgiving weather in Phoenix?

Phoenix typically reaches 71-73 degrees on Turkey Day and has received measurable rainfall on the holiday just twice since 1989.

Temperatures are expected to drop a few degrees as the long weekend progresses, and a few showers aren’t out of the question, but nothing disruptive.

“We’ll have a cooldown Saturday into Sunday and then a little weak weather system is supposed to move through late Sunday into Monday, so it might bring a little bit of light rain,” Kuhlman said.

Once that system passes, highs are expected to drop into the middle to upper 60s.

“Nothing like drastically cold, but about a 10-degree temperature swing between today and tomorrow and early next week,” Kuhlman said.

Furthermore, December, which starts Monday, could get off to a wet start following multiple major rain events the previous three months.

“Even though the weather system for Sunday-Monday probably won’t mean much for precipitation for Phoenix, I think we’ll have another round middle to later next week where it might be pretty good rain chances,” Kuhlman said.
