Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to move into the Valley on Saturday afternoon and stick around through Sunday, weather officials said.
The National Weather Service for Phoenix noted the best chances for rain will be tonight through Sunday morning, when there is also a possibility for strong to severe storms.
The weather activity is due to remnants of Tropical Cyclone Rachel combining with a low pressure system over the West Coast.
NWS’ current forecast lists a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms in metro Phoenix after 5 p.m. Saturday.
There is a marginal risk for excessive rainfall leading to flooding on Saturday, which increases to a slight risk, around 15%, in parts of the Valley on Sunday.
Rainfall totals will vary due to how scattered the showers and storms are expected to be. However, NWS said metro Phoenix could receive from a quarter to three quarters of an inch of rain, with some parts possibly seeing an inch to an inch and a half of rain.
The rain and storms are supposed to be accompanied by wind gusts of up to 40 to 50 mph.
There is a wind advisory in effect in the Valley from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. NWS warned residents about difficult driving conditions and blowing dust.
It also advised securing any loose objects that could become airborne.
The showers and storms are expected to dwindle by Sunday afternoon.
