Get ready for rain! Phoenix could see its last 100-degree day before weekend storms

Here's where rain is most likely to fall, according to the National Weather Service, which forecasts that Friday could be Phoenix's final 100-degree day of the year.

Watch: Rain chances, cooler temps heading to metro Phoenix as Hurricane Rachel moves north | 43 seconds

Showers and thunderstorms could reach metro Phoenix as early as Saturday afternoon, with intermittent rain continuing through Sunday and strong winds expected even outside thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.

The best chance of rain in the Phoenix area is Sunday morning, NWS meteorologist Katherine Berislavich told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Friday.

“This weekend, we’ll start to see an increase in showers and storms, beginning as early as Saturday afternoon, and they’ll just continue off and on overnight Saturday through Sunday morning and into Sunday afternoon before they really start to taper off,” Berislavich said.

Moisture associated with Hurricane Rachel, which has been downgraded to a tropical storm, is expected to combine with a low-pressure system off California to bring the unsettled weather, she said.

How much rain can metro Phoenix expect?

Rainfall totals will vary across the Valley, with higher amounts currently expected in the northern part of metro Phoenix.

“Over the weekend, the Phoenix area is looking like anywhere from probably about a quarter to three-quarters of an inch,” Berislavich said. “Some areas might see a little bit less, and some areas might see a little bit higher than that, but that’s the typical range we’re looking at.”

Strong winds possible even outside thunderstorms

Wind will be another concern, particularly Sunday morning and afternoon. Residents could experience strong gusts even where thunderstorms aren’t occurring.

“We’ll probably see gusts upwards of 35-45 miles per hour, and those are going to be just non-thunderstorm wind gusts,” Berislavich said.

Thunderstorms could also produce strong, gusty winds, she added.

Could Friday be Phoenix’s last 100-degree day of the year?

The weekend weather also brings a cooldown, and Berislavich said Friday could mark Phoenix’s final 100-degree day of the year.

“It’s looking very likely,” she said. “That’s for sure.”
