Phoenix offers free sand bags at 9 parks ahead of monsoon storms

The city of Phoenix is offering free sand for sandbags at nine parks ahead of storms that could bring heavy rain and flash flooding Monday night and Tuesday.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for all of Maricopa and Pinal counties from midnight Monday night through Tuesday evening.

Moisture from Hurricane Polo and an incoming storm system are expected to bring rain and thunderstorms.

Forecasters expect a half-inch to 1.5 inches of rain across much of the lower desert, with 1.5 to 2.5 inches in higher terrain north and east of Phoenix. Some spots could get more under heavier storms.

Residents must bring their own bags and shovels.

Sand is available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last at:

• Moon Valley Park, 502 W. Coral Gables Drive
• Encanto Park Sports Complex, 2121 N. 15th Avenue
• El Oso Park, 3451 N. 75th Avenue
• Pecos Park, 17010 S. 48th Street
• Trailside Point Park, 7215 W. Vineyard Road
• Aguila Park, 7858 S. 35th Avenue
• Esteban Park, 3345 E. Roeser Road

City officials said sandbags can help dam or divert floodwater.
