Phoenix hits 100 degrees as historic March heat wave stretches to 8 days

PHOENIX — Phoenix’s historic heat wave is showing no signs of letting up.

The mercury topped out at 100 degrees on Wednesday at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service uses for the city’s official readings.

This came after a punishing week of triple-digit temperatures, extending an unprecedented streak of 100-degree days in March to eight consecutive days.

The reading also set a daily record high for the eighth straight day, offering yet another grim milestone for a city that has been baking under relentless early-season heat. The previous record of 99 degrees was set last year.

The continued heat caps a brutal stretch that has rewritten the Phoenix record books. From Thursday through Saturday, temperatures spiked to a blistering 105 degrees, the hottest March readings ever recorded in Phoenix’s 130-year climate history.

At 100 degrees, Wednesday was nearly 20 degrees above normal. The typical high for March 25 in Phoenix is 81 degrees.
