Phoenix sets daily heat record for 2nd day in a row, trend could continue as March begins

PHOENIX — Phoenix set a daily heat record for the second day in row on Sunday.

The mercury at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service uses for its official readings, hit 90 degrees at 1:27 p.m. to surpass the previous March 1 record of 89 degrees in 2016. It later reached 93 degrees.

A record daily high temperature was also reached on Saturday when temperatures hit 92 degrees. This also tied the hottest temperature ever recorded in February, which was reached on Friday as well.

Phoenix first set the high temperature record on Feb. 15, 1921 and didn’t hit again until Feb. 27, 1986.

Prior to the soaring weekend temperatures, the hottest day of the year was Feb. 8 when it was as warm as 89 degrees.

Temperatures are expected stay in the low 90s for the beginning of the week, which means Phoenix could keep the record-breaking trend going Monday as the daily heat record for March 2 is 90 degrees.

Phoenix is expected to start cooling down on Tuesday, when temperatures are predicted to be in the low 80s, before dipping further into the high 70s as the week goes on.
