Phoenix sets new daily heat record, ties monthly record as February heat wave rolls on

PHOENIX — Phoenix set a new record daily high temperature Saturday, and tied the February heat record for a second straight day.

The temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport reached 92 degrees at 3:27 p.m. Saturday, which tied the hottest temperature ever recorded in February.

The temperature reached 90 degrees at 1:40 p.m., which set the new daily heat record.

It surpassed the daily record for Feb. 28 of 89 degrees set in 1986.

Sky Harbor Airport hit 92 degrees on Friday and Saturday. The first time Phoenix saw a temperature this high in February was on Feb. 25, 1921, and the only other occurrence was on Feb. 27, 1986.

The morning low temperature on Saturday at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport also reached a record-breaking 64 degrees, eclipsing the 40-year-old record of 62 degrees set in 1986.

Prior to the current heat wave, the warmest day of the year was Feb. 8, when the thermometer rose to 86 degrees.

Phoenix could break additional heat records on Sunday and Monday. The existing records are 89 degrees for Sunday and 90 for Monday.

Temperatures are predicted to cool off into the low 80s on Tuesday and further into the high 70s as next week progresses.
