Thunderstorms prompt ground stop for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

Thunderstorms prompted a ground stop for some flights to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Thursday morning.

The Federal Aviation Administration order began at 6:47 a.m. and was scheduled to expire at 8 a.m. There is a chance it could be extended.

The ground stop covered departures to Phoenix from flight zones that include Los Angeles, Denver, St. Louis, Dallas and Houston.

As of 7:30 a.m., 52 flights into or out of Sky Harbor were delayed, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware. The Phoenix airport’s website showed 48 delays.

More storms are possible across central and southern Arizona throughout the day, with the best chances in the midafternoon and evening.
