Dust, monsoon storms blow through metro Phoenix

PHOENIX — The National Weather Service (NWS) warned Arizonans as a dust and thunderstorm made its way through portions of metro Phoenix Wednesday evening.

Parts of Tempe as of 2 a.m. received nearly an inch of rain. Western Mesa also received around the same level of rainfall. Chandler received 0.59 inches of rain.

Flooding in the metro Phoenix area was a concern around 9:50 p.m., according to NWS.

Wind gusts of up to 60 mph were expected in some parts of the Valley, while NWS said pea-sized hail was also possible in some areas.

The dust storm warning was in effect until 9 p.m. for Interstate 10, Interstate 17 and the US-60 near Phoenix and Mesa.

In addition to the dust storm warning, a thunderstorm warning was issued for Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert until 9:15 p.m.

A flash flood warning was issued for Tempe and Guadalupe and remained in effect until 10:45 p.m.

NWS advised motorists to avoid driving through flood waters.

NWS said the chances of additional precipitation should increase, and temperatures should decrease throughout the rest of the week.
