SRP gives grant to the Phoenix Zoo to enhance water efficiency

PHOENIX — SRP is giving a grant to support water conservation efforts at the Phoenix Zoo.

It will fund nearly $70,000 in upgrades, according to a Thursday press release. It will also fund up to $12,750 in training and equipment implementation.

“Water is a precious resource, especially in the desert, and the Phoenix Zoo is committed to using it responsibly to sustain our animals, landscapes and the community we serve,” Phoenix Zoo Senior Irrigation Technician Andrew Fontaine said in the release. “Thanks to SRP’s generous support, these advanced water management tools will help us identify issues quickly, optimize our water usage and enhance conservation efforts across zoo grounds.”

SRP will help to upgrade the zoo’s submeters to an Advanced Metering Infrastructure in an effort to increase water efficiency by empowering zoo employees to resolve leaks quickly with technology that reports water usage every 24 hours.

The upgrade will incorporate Hunter Industries technology, which will help the zoo measure water use. Some of that tech includes flow sensors and Wi-Fi-enabled and EPA WaterSense-labeled smart irrigation controllers. Expansion modules for the controllers and a remote control will also help officials monitor water use.

“SRP is thrilled to work with community partners like the Phoenix Zoo who exhibit a deep commitment to water conservation and resiliency,” Elvy Barton, SRP’s senior manager of water and forest sustainability, said in the release. “Together, we’re ensuring a sustainable future for the zoo and the environment.”
