Here are the freeway restrictions Valley motorists will need to watch for this weekend

PHOENIX — Motorists in metro Phoenix can expect mostly smooth sailing on mainline freeways this weekend.

That’s because the Arizona Department of Transportation announced in its Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for Dec. 12-15 that no full closures are planned. However, several freeway restrictions and a road closure that could impede drivers around the Valley are scheduled to be in place.

Additionally, ADOT reminded motorists that weather or other factors could cause plans to change and to check real-time traffic conditions online at az511.gov or by calling 511.

Weekend road closure in Chandler

Motorists in the southern reaches of the Valley will need to plan for a major road to be closed.

ADOT said both directions of Riggs Road will be closed at the Interstate 10 interchange from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. This is due to maintenance work on the bridge over the freeway.

Drivers who exit I-10 at Riggs Road will only be able to turn right.

To avoid this closure, ADOT said motorists should use Queen Creek Road as a detour.

Freeway restrictions to plan for over the weekend

ADOT added that drivers on Interstate 17 in the north Valley, the Loop 101 Pima Freeway in Scottsdale and the Loop 202 SanTan Freeway in Chandler can expect to see lane closures.

Portions of both directions of I-17 between Carefree Highway and Anthem Way are scheduled to be narrowed to one lane overnight from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday due to a paving project.

Additionally, the northbound I-17 on-ramp at Pioneer Road and the off-ramp at Daisy Mountain Drive are also scheduled to close. Motorists will be able to enter the freeway at Daisy Mountain Drive and exit at Anthem Way.

Over in Scottsdale, northbound Loop 101 is planned to be narrowed to two lanes between Shea Boulevard and Princess Drive overnight from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Sunday and Monday so crews can continue work on the ongoing freeway widening project in that area. The left lane on southbound Loop 101 will close at these times, as well.

In Chandler, the eastbound Loop 202 on-ramp at Alma School Road and the right lane between Alma School Road and Arizona Avenue are scheduled to be closed on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. as crews reopen the on-ramp at Arizona Avenue.

Marathon, boat parade to close roads over the weekend

There will also be surface street closures around the Valley this weekend due to two events: the Phoenix Marathon and Tempe’s Fantasy of Lights Boat Parade.
