Weekend roadwork to close 2 stretches of Valley freeway system

PHOENIX – Two stretches of Valley freeway will be closed this weekend for road improvement projects.

As a result, motorists in north Scottsdale and near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport should be prepared for disruptions, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for April 11-14. (All times below are subject to change.)

Starting in Scottsdale, the southbound Loop 101 Pima Freeway will be closed from Princess Drive/Pima Road to Shea Boulevard from 10 p.m. Friday to 8 p.m. Sunday for freeway widening work.

ADOT suggests using southbound State Route 51 or Scottsdale Road as detours.

Drivers in the area should also be on the lookout for the following restrictions in the coming days:

• The northbound Loop 101 HOV lane will be closed from Shea Boulevard to Bell Road.
• The northbound Loop 101 off-ramp at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will be closed from 10 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday.
• The northbound Loop 101 frontage road at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will be closed overnight starting at 9 p.m. Sunday.

What other Valley freeway is closed this weekend?

Meanwhile, southbound SR 143 (Hohokam Expressway) east of Sky Harbor will be closed from the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to Interstate 10 from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for sign work.

The westbound Loop 202 off-ramp at Sky Harbor Boulevard and the ramp from Loop 202 to southbound SR 143 are included in the closure, which is part of the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project.

In addition, the ramps from Washington Street, Sky Harbor Boulevard and University Drive to southbound SR 143 will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday.

ADOT suggests the following detours while southbound SR 143 is closed:

• Westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway traffic can continue to eastbound I-10 for access to destinations south of the closure.
• Eastbound Loop 202 traffic can take the southbound Loop 101 Price Freeway to westbound US 60 bypass the closure.
• Airport-bound traffic can take southbound 44th Street from Loop 202.
