Closure on US 60 in Pinal, Gila Counties this week due to bridges being replaced

PHOENIX — Drivers, be aware: A large section of the U.S. 60 is set to close in both directions this week.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced Monday that a 16-mile stretch of the highway will close as part of a bridge replacement project.

The closure will be in place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between milepost 227 just north of Superior in Pinal County and milepost 243 just south of Miami in Gila County.

Drivers will be able to use State Routes 177 and 77 as a detour around the closure, but ADOT warned this is about a 75-mile-long detour, so drivers need to adjust their plans.

What is causing the closure on U.S. 60?

This closure is due to ADOT replacing both the Queen Creek and Waterfall Canyon bridges, which are located just east of Superior.

Crews are building the new Queen Creek Bridge adjacent to the existing one.

The original Queen Creek Bridge will be removed as soon as the new one is complete.

The Waterfall Canyon Bridge, which is just east of the Queen Creek Tunnel, is being reconstructed into box culverts. This will help improve drainage in the area.

The department added that this project needs to be completed due to the bridges no longer meeting modern standards for bridge construction.

The project, which began in 2024, is expected to be completed in 2026.
