Suspect arrested in deadly hit-and-run that closed Phoenix intersection

PHOENIX – Authorities arrested 24-year-old Michelle Guzman-Garcia who they believe struck and killed a pedestrian in west Phoenix before fleeing the scene on Friday morning.

Officers responded to a vehicle-pedestrian collision call in the area of 43rd Avenue and McDowell Road around 5:45 a.m. and found a man suffering from critical injuries, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Guzman-Garcia was arrested on Saturday.

The victim was identified as 32-year-old Miguel Alteres. He was pronounced dead by Phoenix Fire Department responders.

The intersection was closed for much of the morning while the scene was under investigation but has since reopened.

Witnesses described Jeep SUV that left scene of fatal collision

Investigators determined that the victim was crossing 43rd Avenue just north of McDowell Road when he was hit.

“Witnesses in the area told detectives that a gray-colored Jeep Cherokee had struck the man. A female in her 40s was seen getting out of the Jeep for a short time then got back into the driver’s seat and drove away,” Sgt. Brian Bower said in a media advisory.
