All northern Arizona highways reopened after closures due to winter weather, crashes

PHOENIX — Winter weather and crashes caused several northern Arizona highways to close on Thursday afternoon, but all have since reopened, authorities said.

The Arizona Department of Transportation initially announced the closure of four highways:

• Eastbound Interstate 40 at U.S. 93 (milepost 72).
• Eastbound I-40 at State Route 89 in Ash Fork (milepost 146).
• Northbound Interstate 17 at SR 169 (milepost 278).
• Both directions of SR 64 between mileposts 244 and 264 near the Grand Canyon.

The closures on I-40 and I-17 were lifted on Thursday afternoon. The closure on SR 64 was lifted on Friday afternoon, according to ADOT.

When winter storms hit, ADOT advises all motorists in northern Arizona to pack an emergency kit and plan extra time into their travels due to the weather.

Snowplows will also be working around the clock to clear roads, and motorists are reminded not to pass snowplows and to leave at least four car lengths between the snowplow and their vehicle.
