Smooth holiday travel: No freeway closures in metro Phoenix over Memorial Day Weekend

PHOENIX — Phoenix travelers can expect heavy Memorial Day weekend traffic, but the good news is there are no freeway closures to delay their trips.

There won’t be any shutdowns or restrictions over the holiday weekend, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

More than 970,000 Arizonans are expected to drive more than 50 miles from home over the holiday weekend, according to AAA.

What to expect from Memorial Day weekend traffic

However, officials are warning drivers to stay alert when behind the wheel.

Peak travel periods, like Friday and Monday afternoons, may require drivers to head out early to arrive at their destinations in time.

ADOT recommends drivers be prepared to slow down when traveling through work zones like the Interstate 17 Improvement Project zone between Anthem Way and Sunset Point, which is north of Phoenix.

With Memorial Day weekend on the horizon, ADOT has no planned closures on state highways in order to accommodate additional travel.

Stay alert behind the wheel and allow extra time during peak travel periods Friday, May 23 to Monday, May 26.

Drivers can always check on freeway conditions online, on social media or by calling 511.

What to know about gas prices ahead of Memorial Day weekend

While gas prices are down across the nation, they’re down a little less here in Arizona.

The national average was about $3.20 per gallon as of Thursday morning, according to AAA, but it was $3.38 in the Grand Canyon State.

Only seven states have a higher average than Arizona.
