The closure is part of a two-phase project that started to make improvements along McKellips Road between Loop 101 to Alma School Road. Phase one, which started in May 2023, included improvements to the water, sewer lines and drainage system.

Phase two, which began in January, includes groundwork such as installing new curbs and sidewalks as well as improvements to street lights.

The project is expected to be completed by 2026, according to MCDOT.
