Loop 202 exit in Chandler closing for 2 months for widening project

PHOENIX — An exit ramp in Chandler is closing for approximately two months as part of an ongoing freeway widening project.

The eastbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway off-ramp at Cooper Road will close at 9 p.m. Tuesday and reopen in mid-May, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

ADOT advised motorists headed eastbound on Loop 202 to instead exit at McQueen or Gilbert roads during the closure.

Why is the Loop 202 exit ramp closing for 60 days in Chandler?

The closure is part of the $200 million Loop 202 Improvement Project, which is meant to address growing traffic demands by widening an 8-mile stretch of the Loop 202 between the Loop 101 Price Freeway in Chandler and Val Vista Drive in Gilbert.

The project started in August 2024 and was expected to last two and a half years.

For the project, two lanes are being added in each direction on the Loop 202 between the Loop 101 and Gilbert Road. One lane is also being added in each direction between Gilbert Road and Val Vista Drive.

The widening project is partially funded by Proposition 400, the half-cent sales tax that Maricopa County voters approved in 2004.
