PHOENIX – A long stretch of Interstate 10 will be closed for several days starting Friday night for Broadway Curve Improvement Project work.

The I-10 closure could disrupt traffic near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for March 28-31. (All times below are subject to change.)

Eastbound I-10 will be closed from the State Route 51 “Mini-Stack” interchange in Phoenix all the way to US 60 (Superstition Freeway) in Tempe from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for a traffic shift.

The following ramps will be closed at the same time (or earlier where noted):

  • Southbound I-17 to eastbound I-10.
  • Westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to eastbound I-10.
  • Southbound SR 51 to eastbound I-10.
  • Southbound SR 143 to eastbound I-10.
  • Jefferson Street to eastbound I-10.
  • Eastbound I-10 HOV ramp to eastbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway.
  • Third and Seventh streets, Buckeye Road, 24th, 32nd and 40th streets and Broadway Road to eastbound I-10 (starting at 8 p.m. Friday).
  • Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street to southbound I-17 (starting at 8 p.m. Friday).
  • McDowell Road to southbound SR 51 (starting at 8 p.m. Friday).

Eastbound I-10 traffic will have to detour onto the eastbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway at the start of the closure. Drivers can then take the southbound Loop 101 Price Freeway in Tempe to either westbound US 60 or the westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway to reconnect with I-10 beyond the closure.

In addition, West Valley traffic can use the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway to bypass the closure and reconnect with I-10 in the Ahwatukee/Chandler area.

Where are the weekend restrictions other than Interstate 10?

Only two other areas were flagged in the ADOT weekend advisory.

In the East Valley, the westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway will be closed between Alma School and Dobson roads from 11:30 p.m. Saturday to noon Sunday for work on a an ongoing widening project. The eastbound HOV lane will be closed over the same stretch.

ADOT suggests using Germann or Pecos roads for a westbound detour.

Meanwhile, State Route 347 will be limited to one lane in each direction at Cement Plant Road (Mammoth Way) and the Gila River Bridge north of Maricopa overnight Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. for pavement maintenance.
