I-40 pavement improvement project to cause delays for drivers in northern Arizona

A pavement improvement project on I-40 east of Flagstaff will cause delays for drivers throughout the fall, officials announced.

PHOENIX — A construction project that will cause delays for drivers on Interstate 40 in northern Arizona is now underway.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced last week that work would begin Wednesday on a pavement improvement project on a 10-mile stretch of I-40 east of Flagstaff.

The project will focus on the area stretching from Meteor City Road (milepost 240) and Two Guns (milepost 230), between Flagstaff and Winslow.

Crews will begin the project by replacing the asphalt pavement on the shoulders of the freeway. Once that is complete, the pavement in the travel lanes of the freeway will be replaced.

In addition to replacing pavement, this project will also see:

Guardrails replaced or installed.
Lane striping and other pavement markings removed and replaced.
In-pavement traffic flow detectors installed.

Will I-40 close due to the pavement improvement project?

The freeway will not see a full closure due to the project, but drivers should expect it to be narrowed to one lane in each direction at any time during the work week, according to ADOT.

The department added that work will take place on the freeway until late November, when the project gets put on hold for the winter.

Work will resume in spring 2026. The project is expected to be completed next fall.
