Here’s what Valley drivers need to know about road closures this weekend

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation has good news for drivers getting an early start on Thanksgiving travel this weekend.

That’s because the department announced in its Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for Nov. 21-24 that none of the Valley’s freeways are scheduled to be closed.

However, one East Valley town will see road closures on Saturday due to scheduled events.

Additionally, with possible rain in the forecast this weekend, ADOT is advising drivers to prepare for wet roads and warning that weather or other factors could still cause road closures.

Weekend road closures due to Gilbert Days

The annual Gilbert Days parade, along with the Gilbert half-marathon, 10K and 5K races, will lead to road closures in multiple places in the town on Saturday morning.

The parade, which will run down Gilbert Road from Juniper Avenue to the Gilbert Public Schools office just south of Elliot Road, will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is scheduled to end by 10:30 a.m.

The following roads will be closed from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. due to the event:

• Gilbert Road from Guadalupe Road to Hackamore Avenue.
• Elliot Road between Burk and Ash streets.

For those heading to the parade, information on parking can be found on the town of Gilbert’s website.

The race will take place about five miles west of the parade, starting and ending at Verde at Cooley Station, just south of Recker and Williams Field roads.

Racers will run on Recker Road between Williams Field Road and the Western Powerline Trail, just north of Elliot Road.

The half-marathon will start around 7 a.m. and all racers are expected to be finished by 11 a.m.

The run will lead to rolling closures at the following intersections:

• Williams Field and Recker roads between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m.
• Ray and Recker roads between 6 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
• Warner and Recker roads between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m.
• Elliot and Recker roads between 6 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

The race and parade will also cause changes to local Valley Metro bus routes. More details can be found here.
