Valley motorists get a 2nd consecutive light weekend of freeway construction

PHOENIX – It’s not a holiday this time, but Valley motorists can expect a second consecutive light weekend when it comes to freeway construction.

Coming off a Memorial Day weekend break, there are just a smattering of metro Phoenix traffic concerns in the coming days, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for May 30-June 2. (All times below are subject to change.)

The sole full freeway closure will be in the East Valley, but it’s only for half a day. The westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway will be closed from Gilbert Road to Cooper Road from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday for work on an ongoing widening project.

The westbound Loop 202 on-ramps from Santan Village Parkway, Val Vista Drive and Lindsay Road will also be off-limits, as will the westbound Loop 202 frontage road from Lindsay Road to Gilbert Road and the eastbound Loop 202 HOV lane from Cooper Road to Gilbert Road.

Drivers can detour via Pecos or Germann roads or use US 60 (Superstition Freeway) as a freeway alternative while Loop 202 is closed.

What other freeway construction is scheduled this weekend?

Further north in the East Valley, the northbound Loop 101 Price Freeway ramp to the westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway in Mesa will be closed overnight from 9 p.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Monday for pavement maintenance.

Meanwhile, the right lanes of the Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway in the northwest Valley will be closed in both directions near 51st Avenue from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for bridge work.

In a related restriction, 51st Avenue will be closed in both directions at Loop 101.

Conspicuous by its absence from this weekend’s list is the I-10 Broadway Curve Project, which is nearing completion after years of traffic disruptions.
