Main road through Sky Harbor International Airport to see overnight closures Nov. 9-18

PHOENIX — Drivers planning to drive down eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard should mark their calendars for overnight closures starting Sunday.

The road will close on the north side of Terminal 3 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Sunday to Nov. 18 — except for Friday and Saturday nights.

Airport officials announced Thursday that the closures are due to construction on the terminal’s North Concourse. The project will add about 173,000 square feet and six gates to the airport.

Officials recommended entering the airport from the east and using the PHX Sky Train stations at 24th and 44th streets to drop off or pick up travelers.

All eastbound drivers will have to use Terminal 3’s inner curb lanes as a detour during the closures.

Sky Harbor officials advised drivers to expect delays and plan for extra travel time due to likely congestion from the overnight closures.

Despite the closures, the Terminal 3 Garage will still be accessible from westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard. Additionally, the garage exit to eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard will be open and ready for traffic.

While nightly eastbound closures on Sky Harbor Boulevard will disrupt traffic for about a week, they’re just one of several challenges travelers may encounter at the airport.

The ongoing government shutdown is causing widespread disruptions, such as staffing shortages.

On top of that, Sky Harbor’s social media accounts said the airport was anticipating delays due to air traffic capacity constraints.

Flight-tracking website FlightAware listed 127 delays on Thursday for flights into or out of Phoenix as of noon.

Meanwhile, the Sky Harbor website showed 73 departures that were scheduled between 11 a.m. Tuesday and 11 a.m. Friday as delayed.

As if traffic delays weren’t enough, travelers should know that Phoenix Sky Harbor is on a federal list of airports where flights will be cut by 10%.
