SR 347 construction begins with lane closures, reduced speed limits

Paving work on the $396 million State Route 347 widening project between Interstate 10 and Maricopa resumed Tuesday night after a pause for the holiday weekend, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

The pavement rehab is the first phase of the $396 million SR 347 Improvement Project, which will widen the 14-mile corridor, add interchanges and improve intersections over the next three-and-a-half years.

The goal is to ease congestion on the primary route connecting Maricopa, recently recognized as one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, to the Greater Phoenix area.

Crews are first upgrading existing travel lanes and shoulders to prep the roadway for wider construction expected to begin this winter, ADOT said.

How will SR 347 construction impact drivers’ commutes?

Lane restrictions and closures will occur primarily during off-peak hours on weeknights and weekends. Two lanes will remain open in each direction during peak commute times. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph, dropping to 45 mph in active work zones.

When the project is complete in 2029, SR 347 will have an added third lane in each direction with a concrete median barrier, smoother interchanges at Riggs Road and Mammoth Way, and upgraded intersections at Casa Blanca Road and Maricopa Road.

The corridor runs through between Maricopa and Pinal counties primarily within the Gila River Indian Community.
