1 woman killed in multi-vehicle collision on Loop 202 in Phoenix

PHOENIX — A woman is dead after a multi-vehicle collision on the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway in Phoenix on Sunday, according to authorities.

The Department of Public Safety said a driver traveling westbound on the freeway lost control and hit a median wall at 40th Street around 5:20 a.m.

The Dodge Durango spun around to the point that it eventually faced the wrong direction and blocked the center lane. The driver exited the Durango on foot and has not been located, DPS said.

A woman then parked her car on the right shoulder of the freeway, turned on her emergency flashing lights and exited her vehicle in what authorities assumed was to check on the Durango. Another driver then saw the Durango facing the wrong way and swerved to avoid it, striking the woman, who was taken to a hospital where she later died.

The driver that swerved was also injured and taken to a hospital. Authorities said impairment has not yet been ruled out for this driver.

DPS said a tire then rolled off the Durango and went into the eastbound lanes and caused another collision, this one without injuries.

Later, another vehicle hit the Durango, but that driver was not injured.

A fifth crash later occurred involving three vehicles, according to authorities. No one was injured, but one individual was arrested for DUI.

The freeway was closed for more than five hours but reopened just after 11 a.m.
