Two dead after World War II-era plane crashes outside of Phoenix

PHOENIX — Two people person were killed Friday when a small World War II-era plane crashed just outside of the Phoenix area, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said.

Officials said although the plane was a one-seater, a second body was found when the wreckage was recovered. The pilot of the plane was the first confirmed victim.

Their identities have not been released.

The vintage military plane went down near the town of Maricopa, about 35 miles south of Phoenix. It caught fire after the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane was a North American Aviation P-51D Mustang, a World War II-era fighter plane.
