Woman found in Phoenix roadway dies after hit-and-run

A woman was pronounced dead after a hit-and-run in Phoenix over the weekend, authorities announced Monday.

Officers responded to reports of an injured person in the area of 27th and Michigan avenues around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, the Phoenix Police Department said.

They found 39-year-old Erika Monique Garcia lying in the roadway, unresponsive.

First responders with the Phoenix Fire Department took Garcia to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A witness told authorities they saw Garcia lying or bent over in the roadway’s crosswalk, adding that when they returned she was still there and appeared to have been hit by a car.

However, the driver who allegedly hit Garcia did not remain at the scene.
