PHOENIX – A woman from Canada died Thursday evening while hiking at Grand Canyon National Park, authorities said.

Officials received a 911 call about a hiker in distress on the Bright Angel Trail above Three-Mile Resthouse around 5:50 p.m., the National Park Service said in a press release Friday.

The woman, 41-year-old Melanie Goodine of Ottawa, became unresponsive a short time later, and bystanders started CPR.

Search and rescue personnel arrived and assisted with life-saving efforts, but they could not resuscitate her.

The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner are investigating the incident.

Goodine was on her way out of the Grand Canyon after hiking to the Colorado River earlier in the day, according to the release.

Park officials discourage hikers from trying to make it from the South Rim to the river and back in one day. The Grand Canyon website has a page with tips about safe hiking practices.
